Zanzibar is an island of relaxation and culture in the middle of the Indian Ocean, offering a beach holiday and history together.

Beaches

Stone Town

Zanzibar contains two different holidays

Stone Town offers history, street life and spice culture; the coasts bring tides, sea and a slower rhythm. Splitting the stay between a few nights in town and the rest on the beach reduces long transfers and reveals both faces of the island.

Choose a coast with the tide

On parts of the east coast, the sea may retreat hundreds of metres; it is beautiful but can surprise travellers expecting uninterrupted swimming. Consider the tide pattern, reef and your swimming preference together when choosing a hotel.

Plan the sea day

Weather, current and visibility can change boat and snorkel outings. Carry sun protection, water shoes and a small waterproof bag, and ask about safety equipment before departure.

Approach island culture thoughtfully

Dress more modestly away from resort beaches and ask before photographing people. A locally guided Stone Town walk gives context to the memory of the slave trade and Swahili culture rather than treating them as scenery.
