How to Perform Umrah? A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Umrah consists of entering the state of ihram, performing tawaf around the Kaaba, doing sa’i between Safa and Marwa, and then shaving or trimming the hair to exit ihram. It can be performed at any time of year except during the days of Hajj. This guide explains every step in order for first-time pilgrims.

The steps of Umrah

1. Intention and ihram

Before the miqat boundary, one performs ghusl, wears the ihram garments and makes the intention for Umrah, then recites the talbiyah: “Labbayk Allahumma labbayk.” While in ihram, prohibitions such as cutting hair, using perfume and arguing are avoided.

2. Tawaf

After entering the Masjid al-Haram, one circles the Kaaba seven times starting from the line of the Black Stone. After tawaf, two rak’ahs are prayed behind the Maqam Ibrahim if possible, and Zamzam water is drunk.

3. Sa’i

Starting from Safa, one walks between Safa and Marwa seven times, commemorating Hajar’s search for water.

4. Shaving and exiting ihram

Men shave or shorten their hair and women cut a small amount from the ends. With this, one exits ihram and Umrah is complete.
